I've been feeling under the weather the last few days, so my staple foods have become ginger tea (grated and boiled), fresh dandelion greens in several different recipes (vinegar or garlic! yum!), stir fry full of veggies and onions and garlic, and glasses and glasses full of water.
My pregnant body has already been needing water through the night, but last night I drank three 14-oz glasses full of water, plus 2 cups of ginger tea!!
Dandelion Greens:
I've been treating myself to the sauteed dandelions at least twice a week since I found them in both Hannaford and Price Chopper's veggie section! It makes the baby happy, and strengthens the liver.
The greens are slightly bitter, which can be counteracted by Susun Weed's recipe from "The Childbearing Year" in which the greens are put into boiling water, drained, back into boiling water and drained again two or three times. At that point, douse them with vinegar of your choice, some cold-pressed olive oil, and sprinkle some salt over them. Enjoy! You could probably mix in a pinch of Dulse if desired.
My other recipe is to perform the boil and drain several times, then allow the water to evaporate and drizzle a small amount of olive oil into the pan with the wilted greens, adding a number of pressed garlic cloves. Done! Perfect finger food.
I Love My Kitchen:
My most-used kitchen implements seem to be my OXO garlic press (it works perfectly - they have the angle and shape just right! It is significantly better than any other garlic press I have used.) and my Wusthof santoku (plus a honing steel!). Tuesday evening a friend and her family were over for dinner. She has never used sharp blades, and I offered her the experience. How amazing it is to switch to a slim, sharpened blade that cuts vegetables without hacking or sawing. Her poor husband is afraid that it's more dangerous to have effective, sharp blades in the kitchen...on the contrary, keeping only sharp blades for cutting is much less dangerous than one in which you have to use brute force to cut!
I get to appreciate the wonderful kitchen Mark made for me with love every day.
Baby news:
I'm feeling movement, small gentle flicks! It really enjoyed the cider donut I ate on my drive home from my prenatal visit with my midwives on Tuesday. Wow!
